YBH Build Terminology Defined<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Yankee Barn Homes staff is an industry-seasoned group of people. Not to say we’re old but, our combined years in the home building industry are extensive. We eat, sleep, and breath building homes five days a week. Terms familiar to us might not be part of the non-builder’s vocabulary. Realizing this may be the case, we present YBH build terminology in one easy to access article. We hope this list helps those who might not be fluent in builder-speak.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

YBH Build Terminology; A-K<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Anchor Bolt:<\/strong>\u00a0A bolt set at the top of the foundation; used to secure the wood structure to the concrete foundation.<\/p>\n

Apron:\u00a0<\/strong>The bottom piece of window trim below the sill or stool.<\/p>\n

Beveled:\u00a0<\/strong>A corner created not by a right angle intersection but by an additional angled surface.<\/p>\n

Butt End:\u00a0<\/strong>To butt means to join end to end. The butt end refers to the flat end of a piece of wood.<\/p>\n

Chamfered:\u00a0<\/strong>The decorative quality of posts may be increased by cutting off a small portion of the square corner leaving and angled (beveled) surface. The chamfer cut extends through much of the length of the posts but stops short of the ends.<\/p>\n

Chase:\u00a0<\/strong>A groove or channel for carrying electric wires.<\/p>\n

Clerestory:\u00a0<\/strong>A substantially windowed wall. The glass is often above a lower adjoining roof.<\/p>\n

D:\u00a0<\/strong>Abbreviation for penny. Penny is a weight measure used to categorize nails.<\/p>\n

Downlap:<\/strong>\u00a0To extend a material down and over the material below. For example, siding may downlap a concrete foundation. Opposite of uplap.<\/p>\n

Ell:<\/strong>\u00a0An extension wing generally at a right angle to the main house.<\/p>\n

Flanged Door or Window Unit:\u00a0<\/strong>The flange refers to a nailing fin on the edge of the unit which is used to attach the unit to the structure.<\/p>\n

Flush:\u00a0<\/strong>Set in a level or even manner so as to be in alignment.<\/p>\n

Frieze Boards:\u00a0<\/strong>Boards which form an ornamental band at the top of a wall.<\/p>\n

Gable End:\u00a0<\/strong>The side or end of a building where the top of the wall slopes with the top of the roof.<\/p>\n

Jig:\u00a0<\/strong>A device used as a template or form.<\/p>\n

Keyed:\u00a0<\/strong>In many of the on-site operations, the positioning of the first member absolutely dictates the position of those to follow. These latter members are said to be \u201ckeyed\u201d to the first member.<\/p>\n

Knee Brace:\u00a0<\/strong>A timber at a forty-five-degree angle which adds support to two timbers which meet at a right angle.[\/vc_column_text]
