National Association of Women in Construction
Yankee Barn Homes COO Kerri Post recently attend the National Association of Women in Construction Conference, held in Houston, Texas. For those who might not be aware of this organization, here’s a bit of information about the group.
The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) originated as Women in Construction of Fort Worth, Texas. Sixteen women working in the construction industry founded it in 1953. Knowing that women represented only a small fraction of the construction industry, the founders organized NAWIC to create a support network for women working in a male-dominated field. Women in Construction of Fort Worth was so successful that it gained its national charter in 1955 and officially became the National Association of Women in Construction.
Today, NAWIC is still based in Fort Worth and has over 115 chapters throughout the United States that provide its members with opportunities for professional development, education, networking, leadership training, public service and more. NAWIC continues the vision of its founding members by advocating for the value and impact of women builders, professionals and tradeswomen in all aspects of the construction industry.

YBH COO Kerri Post gives us her take on the conference:
“I attended the NAWIC 69th Annual Conference in Houston, TX, where women from around the country gather to meet, inspire, mentor and celebrate each other. Women make up just 10.8% of the construction industry with only 1% being in an executive position. The NAWIC’s conference allows women the time and space to share experiences and challenges they otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to do. The conference was kicked off with motivational speaker Christine Cashen She was amazing, giving the opening keynote “How To Stay Inspired When You Are So Darn Tired! Reboot, Reframe”.
Over the four days, seminars were offered on three different education tracks; Industry – Field, Industry – Office Professional, and Industry – Career and Leadership Advancement. Each offered information spanning everything from the practical, such as job costs, to managerial handling of employee conflict. It was an amazing experience and I gained valuable information. I was thrilled to discover I am no longer an outlier in my field.”

Since returning from the conference, Kerri reports she has implemented quite a bit of the information she gathered while in Houston. Kerri believes the conference was a valuable experience and is already making plans to reconnect with new friends she made at next year’s conference.
